“We are elated by the news that our regional winner vying for the 10th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) National Level Championship made it and became the grand winner,” DOLE Regional Office No. 7 Director Exequiel R. Sarcauga said upon receiving the good news from Engineer Gines Timosa of the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC)-REU-7.
The Knowles Electronics (Philippines) Corporation located at the Cebu Light Industrial Park, Lapu-Lapu City was adjudged national finalist under the institutional category, while its staff, Engineer Oliver Z. Abelgas, the company’s safety officer, was proclaimed national winner in the individual category.
“We would like to congratulate the management and staff of Knowles Electronics (Philippines) Corporation and Engineer Abelgas for such an achievement. Truly, they make us very happy and proud!” said Director Sarcauga.
More than the honor that the champions brought to the region, the electronic company’s, as well as its safety officers’ contributions as prime movers of advocating for safety, health, and wellness of the workers is something which makes the Department genuinely happy.
“Their implementation of the programs on 5S, health and wellness, emergency response, environmental protection, and energy conservation involving all levels of the organization with full support from top management is testament that what the DOLE is constantly working on and promoting for has come to fruition,” he added.
He said that what the company is demonstrating in the workplace complements the initiatives of the Department in ensuring that safety and health are made non-negotiable for all workers. “May they serve as role models to all other establishments in the region insofar as promoting the safety and health of the workers are concerned,” Sarcauga said further.
In 2014, Knowles Electronics (Philippines) Corporation was awarded with certificates of compliance to General Labor Standards (GLS) and Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHS). It was likewise recognized for being a Child Labor-Free establishment.
“They were awarded on 18 November 2016 at the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) main office in Quezon City during the conduct of the National Occupational Safety and Health (NOSHC) Congress,” said Timosa.
The GKK is a national award given by the DOLE in recognition of the outstanding achievements of establishments and individuals in terms of responding to the safety and health needs of workers, workplaces and community.
It is a biennial award afforded to companies and individuals with outstanding occupational safety and health practices, programs, innovations and contributions and is likewise one of the five (5) good housekeeping seals under the DOLE Incentivizing Compliance Program which aims to encourage companies to voluntarily comply with general labor laws and occupational safety and health standards.
